LIGHTS&A CAMPUS is a comprehensive initiative, combining research and graduate education, which positions Bordeaux University as a major photonic sciences campus. It benefits from the “Grand Programme de Recherche” (GPR) LIGHT, an excellence programme funded by the university of Bordeaux since 2021.
With its 200 faculty members and researchers, the consortium involved in this program is built on the community of the cluster of Excellence LAPHIA largely extended to new groups of materials science, chemistry and biology. The GPR aims at amplifying the dynamics initiated by our community to promote the development of high-impact research in light sciences and applications and to place it at the forefront of international excellence.
It possesses both the critical mass and interdisciplinary expertise necessary to tackle the major scientific challenges in order to bring photonics and quantum technologies to the level of integration.
LIGHTS&A campus benefits from an “Ecole Universitaire De Recherche” LIGHT Sciences and applications awarded in 2018 as part of the third “French Investment for the Future” program (PIA3). LIGHTS&A is a graduate program of training through research and for research.
Local, Regional and international positionning
The University of Bordeaux (UB) is quoted as a top French university in Light sciences and applications. It is recognized and widely financed by the French government through the successive Excellence and “Investing for Future” (PIA) programs. The attractivity of Bordeaux campus was further strengthened in 2011 by the installation of a branch of the Institute of Optics Graduate School (IOGS), one of the major research and training school “grande Ecole” for Optics in Europe.
Researchers
The interdisciplinary LIGHT consortium is formed by researchers affiliated with the University departments “Sciences of Matter and Radiation”, “Bordeaux Neurocampus”, “Engineering and Digital Sciences” and “Health Sciences and Technologies” as well as with CNRS, INSERM (à verifier), CEA and IOGS.
In the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, the installation of the €7B Laser MégaJoule infrastructure at CEA-CESTA was the driving force for the development of a rich industrial network. Its competitiveness cluster Alpha RLH gathers now more than 200 companies and 10 000 jobs. Now, “Laser, Photonics and Medical Imaging” is one of the 10 regional “Smart specializations”.
LIGHTS&A CAMPUS is fully positioned in two major European roadmaps :
The field of “Photonics” has been selected as one of the six European Key Enabling Technologies, due to its capacity to address some of the greatest revolutions of the 21st century (Photonics 21). It led to a double-digit growing industry which reached a market of more than €600 billion in 2020.
The Quantum Flagship is one of the most ambitious long-term research and innovation initiatives of the European Commission. Quantum technologies are recognized as one of Europe’s future growth drivers.
A Highly Interdisciplinary Consortium
LIGHT consortium is highly interdisciplinary and has wide range of competencies.
It gathers :
- Physicists world experts in Lasers and photonics, Extreme regimes light & matter, quantum matter, Naonosciences, as well as in innovative microscopies,
- Chemists and material scientists having a strong experties in photonics materials and molecular photonics, nanomaterials and metamaterials as well as surface science
- and biologists renowned experts in neuroscience in cellular biology, in electron microscopy and structural biology.
LIGHTS&A CAMPUS consortium is composed of :
50
research teams from 14 laboratories
200
permanent researchers and engineers
Laboratories and Institutes involved in Bordeaux LIGHTS&A CAMPUS
