The PETRUX team (Groupe Particules Et Transport. Rayonnements Ultra-brefs. matière sous conditions eXtrêmes) is carrying out research, mainly experimental, on high-intensity laser-plasma interaction (with laser pulses of duration ns to fs) and the physics of high energy density (HED) matter. The HED regime is reached when the external energy density applied to a material exceeds ~1011 J/m3 (or ~Mbar pressure), leading to strong changes in the properties of matter, strongly coupled and degenerate condensed matter, going through hot dense matter to plasmas. These extreme states of matter are particularly interesting and appear naturally in planetary science and high-energy astrophysics, as well as on the laboratory scale in experiments in plasma acceleration, inertial confinement fusion (ICF), and astrophysics on a reduced scale.
The PETRUX team manages the CELIA laboratory’s Laser installations: Aurore 2, Eclipse 3 and Eclipse 4 experimental rooms (the latter is in the final commissioning phase) in the areas of secondary sources (X-rays and particles), associated diagnostics and of the underlying physics.
